The Defense Economic Adjustment Program has helped hundreds of communities, large and small, alleviate community level effects from actions like the closing of a military base or the termination of a major Defense contract. OEA provides technical expertise and financial assistance to State and local governments in planning community adjustments and economic diversification.

The Defense Economic Adjustment Program helps communities to respond to a variety of situations:

OEA also serves as a focal point for transition assistance from other relevant Federal programs that can be applied in a coordinated manner to plan and implement adjustment strategies.

Plane hanger To support the Defense Economic Adjustment Program, the Economic Adjustment Committee(EAC) was established by Executive Order 12788 to coordinate Federal interagency and intergovernmental adjustment assistance. Efforts are presently underway to update the EAC Executive Order to ensure a responsive menu of federal support for communities affected by future BRAC activity. The EAC is solely composed of Federal Departments and Agencies, including those with specific programs for technical and financial assistance to assist communities, business and/or workers with responding to DoD-driven impacts.

OEA also works directly with States through its State Planning assistance program to enhance State capacity to assist communities, businesses and workers adversely affected by Defense program changes.
