Military Mission

Fort A.P. Hill, located approximately 90 minutes south of the National Capital Region, is an all-purpose, year-round, military training and maneuver center providing realistic joint and combined arms training. With 76,000 acres of land, including a modern 28,000 acre live-fire range complex with more than 100 direct and indirect fire ranges, it is one of the largest East Coast military installations in the United States. Military units can engage in training ranging from small unit operations to major maneuvers with combined arms and live-fire exercises. Fort A.P. Hill also has an aerial gunnery range supporting combat training for rotary wing aircraft. All branches of the Armed Forces, Active and Reserve units, along with various state and federal agencies, train at the installation, as well as a number of foreign allies.

Joint Land Use Study Planning Process

The Army nominated Fort A.P. Hill for a Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) primarily due to commercial and retail growth adjacent to Fort A.P. Hill. The neighboring jurisdictions, including the Towns of Bowling Green and Port Royal, and the Counties of Caroline, Essex, King George, and Spotsylvania support the JLUS. The Town of Bowling Green, as the project sponsor, has formed a JLUS Policy Committee consisting of the chief elected officials from the participating jurisdictions. The Policy Committee representatives have identified individuals to participate on a Working Group, primarily consisting of planners and engineers, to guide the process and assist the JLUS consultants. The Army is represented on both the Policy Committee and Working Group.

The goals of the JLUS are to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens represented by the participatory communities, and to promote a strong relationship between the public and the military. As the JLUS process continues through 2013, the project consultants will identify additional goals as the project evolves.
