Background on Installation

The Onizuka Air Force Station is an 18-acre high-security military communication station with 507,4560 square feet in 33 buildings, including the “Blue Cube,” which housed the space systems operations. Prior to 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) 2005 actions, the facility also supported the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Mission Control. These facilities have moved to Vandenberg Air Force Base. This closure resulted in the loss of 107 military personnel and 171 civilian jobs.

Property Reuse – Disposal

The Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) designated the City of Sunnyvale as the Local Redevelopment Authority (LRA) in April 2006 for redevelopment planning. In the Federal property screening process, the Air Force accepted a request from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for an approximately four-acre enclave on the base. The city conducted a comprehensive planning process and completed the reuse plan in December 2008. This initial redevelopment plan focused on an auto mall, with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs enclave and homeless assistance services located off-site. In October 2010, the LRA ceased its interest in the auto mall due to changes in the economy and the impacts on the automobile business. In March 2011, the Foothill-De Anza Community College District expressed interest in locating a campus on the closed base. The LRA is working to complete the revised plan, which includes this education reuse,a city emergency services facility, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs enclave. The LRA is continuing its efforts to finalize the homeless services accommodations, which are driven by BRAC reuse planning requirements.
