Long Beach has received a $3.9 million federal grant to help mitigate impacts of Boeing closing its C-17 cargo plane manufacturing plant.

The Defense Department Office of Economic Adjustment made the grant to help the city develop a comprehensive transition plan for the property and Boeing’s workforce. The money will be spent over two years with direction from the Pacific Gateway Workforce Development Board to consider future uses for the plant and surrounding site, help area companies that were supplying Boeing to find diversified markets and develop a workforce skills platform to help working who want to transition to new jobs.

“This is a unique opportunity to turn the closure of the C-17 plant into a transformative moment for the city of Long Beach,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in the grant announcement. “The investment made by the Department of Defense will help strengthen Long Beach’s economy, and solidify our city’s role as a leader in industry and innovation.”

City officials already have begun reaching out to industry and education leaders to begin developing a project plan. The release said there will be opportunities for the public to comment on proposed uses for the site, which is on the western end of the Long Beach Airport.
